Out Of Office
Year three of
the pandemic and offices are growing emptier than ever before. Even before all
of the viruses many workers have opted to work from home. White-collar workers
mostly everywhere are working hybrid schedules or totally remotely. Barely
anyone shows up for Fridays. Essentially, people are “out to lunch” all day
long at the office on Fridays. It’s become the culture to stay at home on
Fridays rather than coming in to make small talk around the water cooler. Some
employers encourage it stating that they have seen a brand-new and refreshed
worker with increased productivity. But some employers are looking to drag
workers from their living room couches on Fridays. Bosses have reported having
to lure workers in on Fridays with catered events, taco trucks, parking lot
barbecues, ice cream socials, wine carts, even, and karaoke contests, all in
the name of a “mandatory staff meeting.” However, I’m seeing people not showing
up for Mondays as well. And don’t even let it be a holiday weekend. You may not
see anyone until Tuesday or Wednesday. Mondays are said to be the second-lowest
turnout day with only half of employees dropping in on Tuesdays. People want
that early start to the weekend. Some begin to wind down on Thursdays, Friday
Eve, or Friday Junior, or whatevs! You can’t catch a Zoom call or a training
happening much anymore on a Friday but a many Do Not Disturb on emails. While
some are living for the weekend and skipping Fridays at the office to run
personal errands and to go to happy hours there are those working mandatory
100-hour workweeks. Straight manual labor. Either way there is still a lot of
work to be done!
