A town called Freedom is a 'safe haven' for Black families

The Freedom Georgia Initiative began as a group of 19 families who pooled resources together to purchase 97 acres of land near Toomsboro, Georgia. The organization is now building a new city from the ground up on more than 500 acres, and counting, and they encourage Black businesses and entrepreneurs to get involved. Creating the new town of Freedom, Georgia in which Black people can feel safe and thrive was inspired by the killing of Ahmaud Arbery.

Realtor Ashley Scott, who helped spearhead the movement says: "We know land and homeownership create generational wealth. It has nothing to do with segregation, it has to do with being conscious enough to know that we have to solve our problems with economic development." Freedom will be equipped with its own police department, Black farmers, vendors, business owners, and more, but welcome all people.

Freedom Georgia Initiative leaders say they have a plan to have the city established and expanding in 18 to 24 months. For those interested in becoming involved or learning more, go to: www.baf.solutions.
