LMPD: Louisville seeing uptick in violent crime, Black youth homicides

DeMarrion Fleming, founder of the nonprofit organization Sowing Seeds with Faith is advocating for schools, community centers, and basketball parks to re-open due to the recent uptick in gang violence. Recent homicides during the pandemic involved Black boys under age 18.

Fleming: "I've lost six kids in three months. So, closing centers has cost me six lives, opening centers has not cost me anything. So, I'm going to take the other side of the risk now."

Imani Smith with Office of Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods,
said they anticipated an uptick in violence during the pandemic, but gathering places not being opened cannot be the blame. People are going to respond to the COVID-19 crisis the way that they're mental health allows them to.
