Domestic violence calls up by 114 percent due to pandemic
Stay at home orders present another whole challenge for those in abusive relationships. This May, the Domestic Violence Shelter and Services in Wilmington is reporting a significant uptick in calls from people who are being abused during the pandemic. The organization has noticed a 114 percent in calls since the COVID-19 virus hit the country in mid-March. When living with someone controlling and abusive and isolation is added to the mix, violence escalates. And victims fear looking for shelter for fear of contracting the virus. Shelters stress to never stay in a domestic violence situation, that there are extra precautions being taken to address heath concerns concerning COVID-19.
