COVID-19 sick leave, forcing sick worker to work the grill at restaurant
Happy Tuesday everyone😊. I have been very busy and struggling with what to write since we have all been inundated with COVID-19 updates every few seconds. It seems to be the story dominating the news. It is sad how rapidly the virus has and continues to spread with so many lost lives. I will not be writing on lives lost or those battling the virus, especially out of respect to those families. And I pray for every person and family affected by it. I'm sure each of us knows someone who has been affected by this, whether they work in healthcare, or have older parents with pre-existing health conditions, or have some family in nursing care facilities. What I will focus on is another side of it: those who cannot self-isolate, that do not have the luxury of working from home, and are not afforded sick pay. I will focus on other stories and issues as well with some feel-good stories in between. Stop me at any time if this gets tiresome. Here we go.
Fran Marion is a shift manager for McDonald's, has worked for them for more than ten years, and is making $11.50 an hour. At a time such as this when some jobs are increasing pay, doubling up on the overtime, and putting in place a COVID-19 paid sick leave policy, she is saying McDonald's is not. Ms. Marion or someone representing her is speaking out in a video on how the multi- billion dollar fast food giant is catering only to its corporate employees. She also discloses that she showed up for work one day knowingly sick in order not to miss a bill payment. She took a break from fixing quarter pounders in the grill area to go vomit in the restroom and immediately got back on her job.
