Should The San Francisco Police Department Apologize To The Black Community?
Dear Black People: A (Tough) Love Letter,
Stop crying for an apology! All of the tired "I'm sorry," "I apologize," or "If I offended" statements ring hollow to countless years of systemic racism that is slavery, rapes, lynchings, the breakdown of the Black family, mass incarceration, police killings, workplace discrimination, housing discrimination, discrimination in education, and so forth and so on. "They" can't be trusted. Those holding formal, public "apologies" are simply looking to further their agenda for the offense "they" committed in the first place. "They" do anything for clout, if you will, and attempt to rewrite and ultimately erase our heritage. And so, I'm not saying to not forgive, but we won't forget. But what I won't do is beg for a Black police chief's attention in competition with the LGBTQ community, or defend a white teacher to not get fired who may be "afraid" of my Black child, or shed tears if a racist lobbyist were to hand me a name tag with "slave" written on it. No thank you for the fake apologies, but actions, showing and proving, accountability are welcome.
