Judge Kim Berkeley Clark Removes Judge Mark Tranquilli for Calling Black Woman Juror 'Aunt Jemima'

A judge has been removed from the bench, by a Black woman, ironically, for a "private conversation with two attorneys" about putting "Aunt Jemima" on the jury.

That jury in question acquitted an accused drug dealer on January 24th in which the judge was not happy with the verdict. Judge Mark Tranquilli told the prosecutor about the juror: "her 'baby daddy' probably sells heroin and that her presumed bias in favor of heroin dealers had caused or contributed to the not guilty verdict." An Assistant District Attorney and defense attorney were offended and filed separate complaints the next day.

Newly appointed President of the Common Pleas Court, the county's first Black to lead the judicial court, Judge Kim Berkeley Clark, temporarily reassigned Tranquilli off the bench and to administrative duties, "effective immediately." "Judge Tranquilli shall not preside over any cases during this assignment."
