"Does the Black Church still exist, and is it still necessary in contemporary America?"

Reverend C.W. Dawson Jr. was the first Black to earn a Ph.D. in philosophy at Missouri University. He is a professor at Columbia College and Moberly Area Community College and writes for the Missourian.

The Black Church has long been touted as thee formidable house of worship and praise of our God, as well as thee epicenter for social justice. Born out of slavery and white oppression the Black church has become a definite refuge for Black people: for everything from voter outreach events to your local NAACP and ACLU listening to complaints to HIV testing.

Rev. Dawson Jr. believes that if the Black church took more responsibility in this country, we would have less violence in our communities and racism would begin to cease. He even goes so far as to say that the Black church could save America's soul. He asks, "Does the Black church still exist?" Rev. Dawson Jr. also asks that we honor the Black church during this time in Black history.
