Merry Christmas! You're Fired!
That must have been a fat stack of cash received by Premier Surfaces. The kitchen and bath supplies company decided that it wasn't worth it keeping their employees, even after receiving help with the company. Shutdowns not only occurred in Georgia, but in Missouri, and in other places across the country. Premier Surfaces abruptly left nearly 1,000 people jobless in metro Atlanta alone. This all occurred in an email over their Christmas holiday break.
The rub is, Premier Surfaces shut down "effective immediately," not filing proper paperwork giving 60 days notice to the State Labor Department or its employees. Premier Surfaces did mention that there would be no severance pay, back pay, and that health insurance is cancelled. Premier Surfaces is said to be missing in action (on a beach in Waikiki 🤔) as the labor department claims they cannot even get in touch with them. The labor department is assisting the former employees with filing for unemployment and finding new work. For many, the company had become the only career they had known. Civil action lawsuits are encouraged in order to receive backpay and health insurance for each day the employers were short of the 60-day requirement to file paperwork to shutdown.
